It doesn’t surprise me at all to suddenly see social media flooded with propaganda accusing Canada and Denmark of crimes against the U.S.
It doesn’t surprise me, nor should it surprise anyone who has studied history beyond the 9th grade.
It’s what fascists do. It’s literally #Fascism101, right out of Adolf’s playbook—although he didn’t have the internet or bot farms to get it out so fast to the gullible, angry people so willing to believe it and spread it.
Why? Because it “others” people. It makes these “others” the enemy so that support is centralized and power is granted to “protect” us from them. It’s what white Christian nationalists have been doing to immigrants, to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and now Trump is doing it to us.
It’s not surprising— not even disappointing. He doesn’t even hide his lies or his twisting of facts. No matter how nonsensical his ramblings and justifications are, his supporters lap it up like a kitten at its mother’s teat.
What does disappoint me, however, is how gullible our society has become. The same tool that can be used for the volcanic spread of propaganda and misinformation can also be used for education. But too many people choose not to inform themselves, even though facts are easy to find. And when presented with them, they dismiss, ignore, or attack the presenter as a liar.
Why?
Because it’s easier.
It’s easy to blame “others” for all of our problems.
Life unaffordable? Carbon tax.
You’re unhappy? Trudeau.
Can’t find a job? Immigrants.
Can’t buy a house? Also immigrants.
Afraid for your children? Don’t look at Epstein et al.—find a drag queen.
And when you convince people their problems are created by “others,” they rally for the simplest, fastest solution to that problem—again, because it’s easier than actually taking responsibility and investing in long-term solutions. Too complex. Too hard to understand. Point and shoot is much easier.
Trump wanted Venezuelan oil. He told Maduro that. Tried to get it. When Maduro told him to F-off, he bombed a city, killed innocents, and kidnapped Maduro. Now he tells them that the U.S. will “lead” the country and control its oil until a suitable leader is found. In case you aren’t following, that means one he can control.
His followers rallied: “It’s not oil, it’s drugs!”—ignoring all evidence to the contrary, believing propaganda because it’s easier. Cognitive dissonance at its finest.
Now he’s telling Denmark he wants Greenland for “security purposes,” and if they don’t give it to him, he’ll take it. Same play. But this time, a NATO country. He needs more support, and he needs that support to buy his narrative and ignore the fact that the U.S. already has a security presence and agreement with Greenland.
It’s not about security—it’s about resources. But he doesn’t want you talking about that.
Enter propaganda.
“They” are stealing from us!
“They” are a threat to us!
“They” are disrespecting us!
And HE is the only one who can protect you from THEM.
Uncle Don wants you to be angry—to spread lies, twisted truths, and propaganda—so that when he attacks an ally, you support him against them. Because they’re “out to get you,” and he “only has your best interests at heart.”
It’s all an act—and you’re the gullible fool if you believe it.
And when—or where—will it stop?
Again, we turn to history.
Ignoring it empowers it. The only way to stop it is to get informed, take a stand, and speak up and out.
Don’t spread it.
Don’t share it.
Call it out when you see it.
The only time fascists have ever been defeated is when the collective stands up against them—together.
And that’s what the world needs to do now. And we all play a part.
There is no “them.” There is just “him,” and he’s in it for himself.
